Around and on the nose, skin can be excessively oily or dry and appear to have inflamed bumps with explicitly noticeable blood vessels. Despite this theory of alcohol abuse causing drinker’s nose, researchers never uncovered the cause of rhinophyma in these patients. However, evidence was shown that genetic and ethnic predisposition might have caused this skin disfiguration to run in the families of Scottish, English, Eastern European, and Scandinavian descent. As health care research found, rhinophyma is not directly attributed to alcohol.

Being an alcoholic damages personal and working life, but it can eat up a person’s health, leading to illnesses and even death. Rosacea is typically a less severe condition than having rhinophyma, in which the latter takes years to form. However, as time goes by, rosacea symptoms often surface in alcoholics, which can indicate that rhinophyma is starting to materialize. While that might be the case for some, it’s easier said than done.

Differential Diagnosis

Rosacea is not caused by alcoholism, but alcohol abuse can affect rosacea, which may worsen the appearance of a drinker’s nose. When left untreated, the skin condition rosacea can cause the nose to grow or become bulbous in appearance. It typically manifests as a noticeably red, bumpy, or bulbous nose or swollen cheeks.

  • It was once believed that excessive alcohol consumption was responsible for the development of rhinophyma.
  • Viable choices always include the possibility of not performing any surgical intervention.
  • The color of the nose can also appear to be purple, and referred to as “purple nose”.
  • Though, as the condition progresses, skin irritation will increase, and if untreated by antibiotics, thick scar tissue may form.
  • Site information is not to be replaced with or considered professional medical advice.

When rhinophyma has fully manifested itself, surgery will be the most effective option for you. Since rhinophyma can lead to a disfigurement of the nose, your airways could become obstructed. The longer this goes on, the more likely disfigurement can become permanent.

Rhinophyma Treatment

There are several million individuals who attempt to manage their addiction every day, and less than eight percent actually seek treatment. Alcohol is linked to a number of serious health conditions like cirrhosis and heart failure. Heavy alcohol use also has many effects on the appearance of skin, hair, and fingernails.

It is wise to follow these patients by taking clinical photographs, including the chin-up position and the lateral views. Another option is isotretinoin, a drug that shrinks the sebaceous glands, limiting how much oil they make. However, if a person wishes to have surgery, they must stop taking this medication. One option is topical metronidazole (Metrocream), a dug that reduces skin inflammation by inhibiting the generation of reactive oxygen species. Also, chronic infection often results because the fluid from the sebaceous glands thickens and can hold bacteria. Evidence shows that rhinophyma begins as “pre-rosacea,” and the only symptom at this stage is facial flushing.

Contact your provider if you have symptoms of rhinophyma and would like to talk about treatment. A 68-year-old man presented with a large bulbous growth on his lower nose, which he says has been growing for years. He has been embarrassed by the cosmetic appearance for years and relates that he “doesn’t even drink that much.” Recently, he has noticed increased difficulty breathing (Figs 1--22). Surgical and drug-based treatments can help, but limited research suggests that the condition may recur after surgery. Researchers do not fully understand the cause, but they know that the precursor is acne rosacea, which involves inflammatory breakouts of pimples. The symptoms of rhinophyma become worse if they’re left untreated.

Later, the nasal skin grows and the tip of the nose becomes larger. It is benign initially, but it may block airways and increase the risk of skin cancer. In the early stages, treatments involves medications, but in the advanced stages, it involves surgery. The procedure smoothes or removes rough, thickened areas of skin and is safe and effective. Once acne rosacea progresses to rhinophyma, the skin covering the nose increases in size and the tip of the nose expands. Rhinophyma is a skin disorder that causes the nose to become enlarged.

However, we know that alcohol may exacerbate existing medical conditions like diabetes or heart disease. This means not every person with an “alcoholic nose” drinks heavily, but many heavy drinkers also have rhinophyma. Given its name—alcoholic nose—it’s not hard to figure out that there was once thought to be a connection between alcohol abuse and a large, red, and bulbous nose.

  • Well, doctors believe it’s due to a chemical in red wine that enlarges blood vessels more than other types of alcohol, which lets more blood than usual flow to the surface of your skin.
  • The inflammation causes broken blood vessels and bumps both on and around your nose.
  • More severe cases should be referred to a specialist, who may consider using topical ivermectin and brimonidine, or oral isotretinoin.
